La Musique

photo-1La Musique

This is a digital print based on Henri Matisse’s 1939 painting “La Musique”.  I have reduced the painting to a series of vertical stripes replicating the cadence of the colors of the original.  Sometimes if you gaze long enough you will see the image of La Musique emerge from the ombré stripes.

Venus Box

Venus Box

I am making a series of boxes using lenticular postcards and my own original lenticular 3D or flip pieces. I am covering these boxes with a collage of images. As the box is handled the images shift. The effect is rich and slightly unnerving.

The Tempest

The Tempest

A deep resin piece using elevations from the Hotel Soubise in Paris. I created a stage set using panels from the room. The “hail storm” is comprised of chunks of citrine crystals that have been gilded on the back so that they pop.

Prometheus

Prometheus

Prometheus, the mortal who stole fire from the gods and subsequently punished by them for all eternity. I guess the moral is that knowledge has its price. My version of the myth involved a split figure enduring a shower of mirror fragments.

The Duel

The Duel

A very deep resin piece. The bust is model inspired by Franz-Xaver Messerschmidt’s weird series of “character busts” from the late eighteenth century. I split the bust in half and gilded it. The rest of the imagery comes from my odd imagination.

Resurrection

Resurrection

Resurrection refers to the miracle of the cycle of life, death and rebirth. The egg symbolizes the immortal soul and the gold of the egg represents eternity and perfection. Ironically the folktale of the “goose and the golden egg” is also a parable of greed. Does one symbol cancel the other?
